Homespun Spring Stitchery Accent Pillow

A few weeks ago I stitched up this little accent pillow because I had spring fever...now that it's the first day of spring...I am already thinking ahead to planting my annual garden.

This little pillow is fast and easy to make and you only need a handful of supplies. It's a great way to use up some of your homespun fabric scraps.

Here is what you will need:

4 3/4" by 5 1/2" piece of tea-stained muslin fabric
Less than a 1/4 yard of homespun fabric
Embroidery Floss, Needle, Scissors and Embroidery Hoop
Sewing machine and basic sewing supplies
Small amount of poly-fiber fill
Disappearing ink pen

Pattern: On a 4 3/4" by 5 1/2" piece of printer paper, write down the words "My (heart symbol) Is In The Garden. (see photo). This paper should be the exact size of your muslin fabric. Use it as your pattern and trace it onto your muslin fabric using a disappearing ink pen.

Using 3 strands of embroidery floss in the colors you choose, stitch the wording onto the muslin. Once you have your hand stiching done, its time to add a border. From homespun fabric, cut four 2 1/2" by 7 1/2" long strips. Use these strips to make a border around your muslin piece. Once you have them attached, measure your front panel. Use those measurements and cut out the same size from homespun fabric. Pin the two pieces together (right sides together) and machine sew around 3 1/2 of the edges. Turn right side out and stuff with fiber fill. Hand sew the opening shut with a blind stitch.

Your little accent pillow is now complete!

FREE and EASY To Make Tooth Fairy Pillow Pattern

Now that I am a first time grandma to an 8 month old baby girl...I knew there would come a time that we would need a tooth fairy pillow. After searching online, I found a free pattern over on the About.Com web site.

You can make it as fancy as you would like by adding lace, rick-rack trim or even embroidering on the front of your pillow. However, I wanted a simple clean look to mine so I just used the pattern shape and chose to make mine out of white cotton terry cloth. It took me less than 30 minutes to make the pillow for my grand daughter. Now that its done, I am going to go out and purchase an iron-on applique with her first name initial and iron that onto the front...but for now, you can see the pillow in the picture up above. I love that it has a little pocket on the front where you can place the tooth and then leave your "fairy" money inside.

Country Homespun Hearts Throw Pillow - FREE Pattern

If you are looking for a quick and easy sewing project, I think you will appreciate this one. Today...I am posting how I made an easy Country Homespun Fabric Pillow that has an attached applique that says 'Homespun Hearts' on the front of it.

I think this little accent pillow makes a great gift or make one for yourself.

Here is what you will need to make this project:

2 pieces of homespun fabric that each measure 12" by 9 1/4" in size
Tea-Stained Muslin or Tea-Stained Cotton Broadcloth (3 3/4" by 5 1/2")
Poly-fiber fill stuffing
Sewing Machine and basic sewing supplies
Cotton Embroidery Floss
Disappearing Ink Pen

I decided to make my pillow in a blue color scheme so I chose blue homespun fabric and blue embroidery floss to match it.

Pattern: On a piece of printer paper that measures 3 3/4" by 5 1/2" in size, write the words "HOMESPUN HEARTS" as shown in the photo. This will become your pattern so center it on your piece of paper. You will then use your disappearing ink pen to transfer the pattern onto your tea-stained muslin. Use 3 strands of embroidery floss and stitch your wording. Once done, use an iron to iron back 1/4" on all edges to the back side of the fabric. (this will hide your raw edges). Next, machine stitch around the edges using a beige colored thread...so that it blends in with the color of your muslin. (you can also hand-stitch it if you would like). Now set this piece aside and work on your pillow.

Place your two pieces of homespun fabric right-sides together and sew around 3 1/2 of the edges. Turn right side out and insert the stuffing. Once done, sew the opening closed with small blind stitches.

It is now time to attach your stitched panel to the front side of your pillow. You can hand stitch it on or use fabric glue, the choice is yours. I chose to hand stitch mine on.

Country Homespun Friends Stitchery Accent Pillow

A few weeks ago I made this little accent pillow for one of my dear friends who was feeling down at the time. I thought it would make a great "I am thinking of you" gift to cheer her up.

Once you complete this accent pillow, it will measure approximately 6 3/4" wide by 7 1/4" tall. I used a 1/4" seam allowance during the sewing construction.

Here are the supplies that you will need:

6" by 6" piece of tea-dyed cotton muslin fabric
1/4 yard of cotton homespun fabric
Embroidery floss to match homespun fabric
Sewing Machine and basic sewing supplies
Disappearing ink tracing pen
Small Embroidery Hoop
Small amount of poly-fiber fill

The saying that I stitched on my accent pillow says: "Side by side or miles apart, Dear friends are always close at heart." Please see photo for placement of wording.

Pattern: On a piece of paper that measures 4 1/4" by 4 1/2" in size, write out the wording as shown in the picture. You will use this as your pattern.

Trace the words onto your muslin fabric with a disappearing ink pen and then place fabric in a small embroidery hoop. Using 3 strands of embroidery floss and an embroidery needle, stitch the wording using small straight stitches.

From cotton homespun fabric, cut four strips that each measure 2 1/2" by 7 1/2", these strips will be used to make the border. Using your sewing machine, sew each border strip onto your muslin fabric. You will need to trim them down once you have them sewn on so that you have a complete rectangle.

Once your front panel of the pillow is completed, measure it and cut a matching back piece out of homespun fabric. Pin the two pieces right-sides together and sew around 3 and a 1/2 of the edges. Turn pillow right-side out and stuff with poly-fiber fill. Using a sewing needle and matching thread, sew the opening shut with a blind stitch.

Adding the accents: From homespun, cut a strip that measures 1/2" wide by 8" long and tie it into a bow. Trim ends of the bow and then hand sew it onto the top center of your pillow. If desired, cut a tiny heart from homespun and glue it to the front of the pillow with fabric glue. (mine is near the word 'always').

FREE Country Designed Muslin and Homespun Pillow Pattern

When it comes to crafting, I love looking for free patterns and instructions. A few weeks ago I stumbled across this FREE printable coloring page design for kids and thought to myself...I like that but I am going to print it out and use it as a pattern to make a primitive country stitchery pillow.

I think the pattern is just way cute! I decided to make it into a pillow for my grand daughters bedroom...it has that little girl country charm to it!

I traced the pattern onto tea-stained cotton muslin fabric using a disappearing ink marker. I then used 2 strands of DMC embroidery floss to stitch the design. If desired, before you start your stitching, you can use some wax crayons to color in some of the areas to give it some extra color. I think it adds a nice touch.

Once I was done with my hand stitching, I added on a 3" wide homespun border to all 4 sides. Once I was done with that, I measured my entire pillow front to come up with my back panel measurements. I used matching homespun fabric and used 1/2" seam allowances. I stuffed my pillow with fiber-fill stuffing since I couldn't find a pillow form that size.

Pretty easy! It took me less than a day to make this pillow for my grand daughter.

Primitive Stitches - Special Friends Primitive Pillow

When it comes to purchasing primitive stitchery patterns, I love to buy mine from Primitive Stitches as there is such a variety of patterns available. Plus...they are super affordable and delivered to your email box in just a few hours for you to print off.

Back in September, I purchased the 'Impossible To Forget Friendship Saying" pattern and stitched it up and then turned it into a throw pillow. I am going to give this as a holiday gift to my best friend Renee this year for Christmas as she loves decorating in the country and primitive style. I stitched the design onto tea-stained cotton muslin using DMC embroidery floss. I purchased an oblong travel-size pillow form at my local craft supply store and used that as my filler. The backside of my pillow is navy blue check homespun fabric. It took me 2 days...one day for my handstitching and then the second day for my machine sewing/pillow construction.

I think my BFF Renee will just love getting this pillow come Christmas!

Primitve Best Friends Stitchery Throw Pillow

Several years ago I purchased a primitive stitchery pattern from the You Are Special Pattern Site ---> HERE and I finally got around to creating it. I made this pillow to give to my best friend Renee for Christmas.

This pattern is from the Sami's Stitchery's line of patterns from You Are Special and its pattern number #306 called Children at heart.

I traced the pattern onto tea-stained muslin using a disappearing ink pen. I stitched the pattern using DMC floss. I used a pillow form that I purchased at the craft supply store for stuffing it and I used homespun fabric for my backing. I think the throw pillow came out fantastic and Renee is just going to love it since she decorates her home in the country primitive style. I was able to complete my project in 2 days.

Primitive Stitches - Stanley Snowman Prim Stitched Pillow Pattern

Last month I purchased several patterns from Rhonda over on the Primitive Stitches Web Site and I highly recommend her patterns to those who are looking for high quality and easy to read primitive stitchery patterns.

I recently completed my snowman pillow. She has named this pattern 'Stanley' and you can find him on her web site under her Snowman category on her web site.

I was able to do all of my hand stitching in one afternoon and the following day I did my machine sewing and turned him into a beautiful holiday pillow. I love decorating my home during the holidays in a snowman theme.

The front of my pillow is tea-stained muslin and the backside of my pillow is navy blue homespun fabric. I was able to use a pre-purchased 13x13" pillow form from my local craft store and I used 1/4" seam allowances as I constructed it.

I think he turned out fabulous!

Primitive Holiday Tree Stitchery Pattern By Primitive Stitches

Last month I found a fantastic web site that offers a ton of primitive patterns to make all kinds of things...such as pillows, wall hangings, candle mats, muslin tags and so much more!

The night that I found the Primitive Stitches Web Site, I swear....I spent a good 2 or 3 hours browsing Rhonda's patterns and I ended up purchasing at least 10 of them. Her patterns are easy to read, easy to understand and best of all...very affordably priced. I got my patterns delivered via email in only a few short hours.

Anyway...she has a free pattern on her web site for a primitive style holiday Christmas tree pillow that you can get free with any pattern purchase that you make. I finally had time a few weeks ago to make my very own pillow using her pattern (shown in the photo above). I think it turned out fantastic and will make a great holiday gift this season.

Country Style Homespun Snowman Pillow

I wanted to make a holiday pillow for a friend who just adores snowmen so I went online and found a pattern by searching for free country style coloring pages. You can find the snowman pattern plus other country coloring page patterns on the Gingerbread Nook web site.

I printed out the coloring page and then used my light box to trace it onto tea dyed muslin fabric using a disappearing marker. I used some crayons to color in some of the areas on the fabric and then used black DMC floss and stitched the outline. I then cut out 2" wide strips from navy blue homespun fabric and sewed them onto the front to frame the stitched design. After measuring my front panel, I cut out a backing from navy blue homespun.

You will want to pin the front and back together with the right sides facing. Sew around 3 edges and 1/2 of the 4th edge. Turn fabric inside out so that the right side is now on the outside. Fill the pillow with some fiberfill stuffing and hand sew the opening closed.

A very simple and easy project to do!
