Play Food - How To Make Felt Doughnuts With Sprinkles

Craft Project - How To Make Felt Doughnuts With Sprinkles

As part of my continuing series on how to make faux play food for kids to play with, here is how I constructed and made my own fancy doughnuts out of felt.

These felt doughnuts can be semi-machine made...however, I found it best to just completely make them by hand-sewing them. A great little take-along craft project or something relaxing to do while watching TV.

Supplies Needed:

Desired Colors Of Felt
Poly Fiber Fill Stuffing
Beads (seed beads and/or 2 MM round beads)
Sewing Thread (to match felt colors)
Scissors
Sewing Machine (plus basic sewing supplies)
Pinking Sheers

Pattern: I made my own pattern. You will need a 4" diameter circle and a 1 1/2" diameter circle.

Cutting The Felt: For each doughnut, you will need a total of three 4" round circles. Cut two of them from the same color of felt and the third one from a contrasting color of felt. Once you have them cut out, you need to cut the center circle which measures 1 1/2" in diameter.

Cutting The Icing Felt: From your contrasting color of felt, you can make a pattern to resemble the glaze or icing by using pinking shears or scalloped edged scissors.

For the assembly directions, I will be using my chocolate doughnut with strawberry frosting as the example.

Assembling The Doughnut: Place the two pieces of brown felt together. Using your sewing machine or hand sewing, sew around the outer circumference 3/4 of the way around. Do not completely sew the entire circumference just yet. Turn your felt inside out. Hand sew the inner circle circumference by hand and then stuff firmly with poly fiberfill stuffing. Now finish sewing the outer circumference by hand with small whip stitches. You should now have your basic doughnut shape.

Decorating The Doughnut: Using pink thread (I used two strands of thread as I wanted it to be sturdy)...hand sew on the beads. I used white round faceted beads and pink crystal seed beads. Once you have it decorated, lay your pink felt on top of the chocolate doughnut and hand sew the icing on by using small whip stitches.

Once you make one doughnut...you will want to make an entire bakers dozen!
