Kids Craft Project - Handstitched Felt Holiday Ornaments

If you are looking for an easy holiday tree ornament that older children can make, then I think you will be pleased with this project. You will only need a handful of supplies. This project is great for teaching older children some hand-sewing skills.

Note: You can use any embroidery floss color that you desire, however...we chose to use red so that it would resemble the striping on a candy cane.

Supplies Needed:

White Felt
Red Embroidery Floss
Blunt Tip Sewing Needle
Scissors
Shapes Template
Poly-Fill Stuffing
Buttons or Faux Jewels
All-Purpose Craft Glue

Template: Our circle, star and heart shapes measure approximately 4 1/2" in diameter. You can make your own patterns with paper to measure that size or any size that you desire.

Trace your shapes onto white felt and cut out. You will need 2 shapes per ornament. Using 3 strands of red embroidery floss, stitch around the ornament shape using a slant or whip stitch. Once you are 3/4 of the way around, insert a little poly-fiber fill stuffing into the ornament and then continue with your hand sewing. Finish up by weaving the ends of your floss inside the ornament.

Using 3 strands of red floss that measure approximately 5" long, thread it through the top of the ornament and tie it into a knot to make a hanging loop. Glue a plastic button or a faux jewel on each side of the ornament to add a little interest.

That's it, a quick and easy craft project for children to do this holiday season.
