Kid's Crafts: Hand Painted Wood Trinket Boxes

Every time I walk through one of our local craft supply stores I always see those balsa wood trinket boxes on sale for $1.00 each. I decided to pick up a few of them and let my 6 year old grand daughter paint and decorate them to give as gifts to her mother, a few of her friends and to her one great grandmother. After all, family & friends love it with children give them handmade gifts!

Kid's Crafts: Hand Painted Wood Trinket Boxes
(per box)

1 Balsa Wood Trinket Box
Acrylic Paints
Water and Paint Brush
Clear Acrylic Sealer or Glossy Modge Podge and Foam Brush
Buttons, Mini Wood Shapes, Stickers, Plastic Confetti, etc.
All-Purpose Craft Glue
Newspaper

Cover the work surface with newspaper. The trinket boxes we purchased were square shaped but they also had heart, circle and oval shapes too. Let the kids paint the outside of their boxes however they choose. Let them be creative with their color choices and designs. Let the box complete dry.

My grand daughter glued mini wood shapes, buttons and other small "finds" to the outside of her trinket boxes to decorate them. If you don't want to bother with that...just hand the kids a few sheets of stickers.

If desired...spray the boxes with clear acrylic sealer in a glossy finish to shine them up or let the kids use a foam brush and coat the outside of the boxes with some clear Modge Podge. Let the boxes dry overnight.

Each box cost us about $1.50 to $2.00 each to make...depending on what she used to decorate them. A quick, easy and frugal kid's craft project idea!

This is another great kid's craft and the boxes can be used as gifts as well as trinket holders. I think the box looks much nicer with wooden shapes glued on to it rather than just stickers.
